Are Ape Hanger Handlebars Dangerous?

Handlebars are an essential part of any motorcycle. They provide a place for your hands to grip and also help to keep you balanced while riding.

Some people believe that ape hanger handlebars are not dangerous if certain precautions are taken. So, are ape hanger handlebars dangerous?

A lot of controversies are there on this issue. If you decide to purchase a pair, consider the following.

Are Ape Hanger Handlebars Safe?

First, there can never be a 100% guarantee against injury when riding, no matter how much safety equipment is used. However, records of deaths caused by using two pairs of regular bars hare there compared to none during the use of ape hangers.

Experiments involving crash tests have found out that ape hangers offer more protection than regular handlebars in cases where the rider falls forward against the front wheel. They are less likely to break or take the blow than conventional handlebars.

Two issues need to be considered when using ape hangers;

  • The increased risk of being thrown off balance after an accident due to a lack of control
  • The possibility of not being able to get out of your seat quickly enough from a sitting position in case there is a sudden stop.

Are They Comfortable?

The ape hanger bars can be comfortable to hold when you ride down a slope. However, they are bound to stress your wrists out if you plan on holding them for any distance.

When cruising at high speed, it becomes tough for the rider to turn his head to look over his shoulder or back towards oncoming traffic. This means it could lead to accidents or near misses because of being unaware of what is happening behind you.

Bottom Line

The best thing to do is to make sure that you are always wearing a helmet when riding. Also, adjust your posture as often as possible to let the blood circulation flow easier into your hands.
